Who is Gary Owen?

Gary Owen (born Gary Stephen Owens on July 26, 1974, in Cincinnati) is an American stand-up comedian and actor. He is 52. He grew up in a trailer park in Oxford, Ohio, graduated from Talawanda High School in 1991 and served six years in the U.S. Navy as a master-at-arms, including the Presidential Honor Guard. He started stand-up in 1995 while stationed in San Diego, was named “Funniest Serviceman in America,” and won San Diego’s “Funniest Black Comedian” contest, which got him into The Comedy Store. In 1997 he joined BET’s Comic View and later became its host, the only white man ever to host the show. Ebony called him “Black America’s Favorite White Comic” in 2011. He dropped the “s” from his surname to avoid confusion with announcer Gary Owens. His specials run from True Story (2012) to Black Famous (Showtime, 2021), and he hosts the GetSome podcast.
