Who is Dave Chappelle?

Dave Chappelle (David Khari Webber Chappelle, born August 24, 1973, in Washington, D.C.) is an American stand-up comedian and actor. He grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland, and Washington, graduated from the Duke Ellington School of the Arts in 1991 and moved to New York, where he was booed off at the Apollo’s Amateur Night, worked open mics such as the Boston Comedy Club and broke out on HBO’s Def Comedy Jam in 1992. His first hour, Killin’ Them Softly, aired on HBO in 2000, followed by For What It’s Worth on Showtime (2004). In April 2007 he set a stand-up endurance record at the Laugh Factory on Sunset. Under a 2016 Netflix deal he released The Age of Spin and Deep in the Heart of Texas (March 21, 2017), Equanimity and The Bird Revelation (2017; the latter filmed at The Comedy Store), Sticks & Stones (2019), The Closer (2021), The Dreamer (2023) and The Unstoppable (2025), eight Netflix specials in all. Sticks & Stones, The Closer and The Dreamer drew criticism, including from advocacy groups and some Netflix employees over The Closer’s jokes about transgender people. He has won six Grammys for Best Comedy Album and the 2019 Mark Twain Prize, and in 2020 he hosted the outdoor “Chappelle Summer Camp” shows near his home in Yellow Springs, Ohio.
